Poem by William Carlos Williams

Apology

Why do I write today?

The beauty of
the terrible faces
of our nonenties
stirs me to it:

coloured women
day workers
old and experiences-
returning home at dusk
in cast off clothing
faces like
old Florentine oak.

also

The set pieces
Of our faces stir me-
leading citizens-
but not
in the same way.
