(George Gordon Byron)

On Revisiting Harrow

Here once engaged the strangers view
  Young Friendships record simply tracd;
Few were her words,but yet, though few,
  Resentments hand the line defacd.

Deeply she cutbut not erasd
  The characters were still so plain,
That Friendship once returnd, and gazd,
  Till Memory haild the words again.

Repentance placd them as before;
  Forgiveness joind her gentle name;
So fair the inscription seemd once more,
  That Friendship thought it still the same.

Thus might the Record now have been;
  But, ah, in spite of Hopes endeavour,
Or Friendships tears, Pride rushd between,
  And blotted out the line for ever.
